• Cryogenics in Grenoble, from research laboratories to major industries in one of the most innovative city
  • CEA/DSBT

The cryogenic engineering department (Département des Systèmes Basses Temperatures or DSBT) is a joint CEA-UGA research laboratory. It is one of the 5 laboratories of the Interdisciplinary Research Institute of Grenoble (IRIG), which is part of the Fundamental Research Division (DRF) of CEA.
The activities of DSBT are structured around three pillars: helium cryogenics, hydrogen cryogenics and cryocoolers and space cryogenics. The DSBT’s general objective is to carry outstanding technological developments, and to provide expertise and prototypes for national and international projects where cryogenics is a key issue. The laboratory is a leading R&D performer which develops innovative solutions over a wide spectrum of realization that covers sub-kelvin and cooling powers of fraction of microwatts, to multi-kilowatts at liquid helium temperatures.

  • Laboratoire National des Champs Magnétiques Intenses

The Laboratoire National des Champs Magnétiques Intenses is a research facility that can accommodate all researchers requiring intense magnetic fields, and the specific experiments developed. It is located at two sites: continuous magnetic fields are produced at Grenoble (LNCMI-G), pulsed magnetic fields at Toulouse (LNCMI-T). LNCMI is a founding member of the European Magnetic Field Laboratory (EMFL).
At Grenoble, an hybrid magnet using superconducting and resistive coils has reaching 42 T (43 T will come in 2026) and is made available for scientists since 2025
