As part of the Quantum Technology Initiative (QTI) at CERN, a project has been established to develop a cryogenic facility for the sub-Kelvin operation of a low-mass axion search experiment. The cryogenic system is designed to cool a bespoke experimental setup to 0.8 K while providing a maximum cooling capacity of 2 W. This experimental platform is hosting a novel superconducting radio-frequency cavity as a quantum detector. The selected cryogenic solution is based on a closed-loop helium-3 circulation system, precooled to 1.8 K by an independent helium-4 flow circuit.
This presentation outlines the key design choices and associated challenges, with particular emphasis on the ongoing R&D activities aimed at optimizing the cryogenic installation and heat extraction at sub-Kelvin temperatures.
