The history of cryogenic applications in the Cryogenics Laboratory of ICSI Rm. Vâlcea began with the hydrogen and deuterium distillation module based on a liquid nitrogen cycle combined with a J-T valve for high-pressure hydrogen flow, with a Linde cooled helium cycle, with a power of 1kW at 20K, used to provide various operating modes of four cryogenic distillation columns, and finally with the experimental stand for the cryogenic distillation of the H2-HD-D2 mixture which allows to determine the performance of various commercial ordered or random packings for hydrogen isotopes separation, in cryogenic distillation columns with a diameter of up to 50 mm (HETP, pressure drop, etc.). Based on the experience gained in these research projects, the next step will be within a European research project, where we will start the development of a liquid hydrogen production system using the Linde HRLS 11 facility, which has a 400 W closed cold helium circuit. In this paper, we will present the steps taken to create this system, including ortho-para conversion, material testing, and studies of the low boiling phenomenon.
